Telefónica Tech recently announced that it has been selected as the technology partner by the joint venture formed by Ferrovial Energía and Endesa for the digital transformation of the public lighting system in Burriana, in Spain's Valencian Community.
Telefónica Tech will deploy a smart lighting solution for the project, enabling the joint venture to manage each of the city's LED streetlights remotely, one by one. The project involves installing more than 6,300 smart control nodes in total. Designed and manufactured by Tellink, these nodes adopt NB-IoT communication technology — a technology that supports large-scale deployment while maintaining stable connectivity even in areas where communication coverage is difficult. Operating data collected from each streetlight is uploaded to a monitoring platform, where operators can view and control it remotely.
With this system, operators can adjust the brightness of each streetlight individually according to the city's actual needs: lighting on roads with little vehicle or pedestrian traffic can be dimmed or switched off, while lighting can be temporarily strengthened during major events, reducing unnecessary power consumption. The system also continuously monitors energy consumption and remotely identifies lamp faults and anomalies — often before problems actually affect residents — allowing maintenance teams to address them in advance.
From an environmental perspective, on-demand lighting also helps reduce light pollution and carbon emissions. The joint venture stated that making streetlights "smart" is not merely about improving energy efficiency; through energy consumption monitoring and timely response to various anomalies, it also makes routine maintenance and equipment management more efficient. The project is invested in and built by the joint venture, with an investment on the scale of several million euros.
Dario Cesena, Director of IoT Business at Telefónica Tech, said: "Our smart streetlight solution uses NB-IoT technology to connect dispersed lighting points, enabling efficient and sustainable remote management. With it, municipalities can reduce urban electricity consumption and save on electricity costs, and can also compress maintenance costs through early prediction of faults."
Dionisio Martínez, CEO of Tellink, said: "We are honored that the joint venture has once again chosen to work with Telefónica Tech on the large-scale deployment of Tellink's TSmart-ZD4i smart lighting controllers and the accompanying remote management platform. This remote management system achieves two goals at once: improving the quality of public lighting enjoyed by residents and visitors, while helping municipalities reduce energy costs and fulfill their sustainable development goals."
